    My "To Do" List

Surprisingly I did do a decent amount of "work" at work today (despite being in ferocious pain throughout the day - even medication didn't dull the pain). And unfortunately I do have actual "work" that I need to accomplish this evening as tomorrow I'm in meetings from 8:00 a.m. right up until lunch. Guess I should actually show up on time tomorrow as it's the quarterly company meeting - I typically wander through the door between 8:15 and 8:30 - and with Palm Beach County back in school on Wednesday, and Broward back in school as of today that means I have to go back to leaving my house at 7 a.m. - ah the brief summer was nice while it lasted - those carefree days of leaving my house at 7:20 a.m.... I'll always have the memories of that extra 20 minutes of sleep.

I've been putting off getting my laptop set up on DSL (don't know what security issues are posed by accessing vpn on a wireless network - doesn't sound too safe though). In the meantime I have my desktop on DSL and my laptop on dial up. My laptop though has Microsoft Office and so to run my Excel spreadsheets and whatnot (or even to open the sequel queries I run remotely) I have to be on the laptop. This could be fixed by either ponying up the cash for Office on the desktop, digging up the disk I used for my laptop and loading it up on the desktop (although I believe that was pirated from 2 employers ago), or getting the laptop on a wireless router to the DSL.

So, I have two photo montages that I've been wanting to create. I still have figured out that it's hard to sneak photos from a digital camera the size of a box of poptarts (I have no other size reference) and so my plan is to goad our department's new employee into doing the dirty work for me (hey her Dad is my boss so it will be team goading). He was telling us that they all got new cell phones over the weekend (and didn't bother to do it under one of those family plans where he could have saved .. and of course adopted me into the family so I could get in on the deal as well..) and they have cameras on them.

So my thought is that tomorrow since we are all headed to Town Center for lunch (courtesy of my birthday - which is actually on Wednesday) it would be a great opportunity to take a stroll around there and collect the necessary photos for one inspired montage - the second one can be accomplished in transit both ways (yep we're going to Stir Crazy - which for some reason they all call "Big Bowl" around the office - don't know if that's what it was once called or if they are referring to someone's appetite).

Okay, so the first montage is to be titled, "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should" and the second one is to be titled, "Dude, you're driving a chic car".

Anyone residing down here, or anyone with family members in a few fashion-dated states (such as myself w/ my Jersey relatives) will fully understand the first one. If they can card you for alcohol and lotto tickets then I say card people for shopping - certain apparel should come with an age and weight restriction. And for the second one - as I indicated earlier today, guys out there - even if you are gay, or if you're straight and your car is broken and your girlfriend offers that you can borrow her car - please just take public transportation or a cab or whatever - but do not think you look in anyway cool driving a mini-cooper - they are not for guys.

So wish me luck on getting these photos - trust me when I say that both opportunities present themselves more often than my stomach can take.

Which reminds me.. I'm driving to work this morning and there is this car behind me.. very attractive guy.. then I notice he starts "digging for buried treasure" .. yuck. Then I note that  he's going the same way as I am (like all the way from the Turnpike up to Clintmoore/Military Trail) and even turns into the Starbucks parking lot and it turned out to be the VW Passat guy I mentioned the other day (and he ordered a man-drink.. that's another rule I believe in - guys have to hand back their "man card" if they get more than one thing added to their coffee - I think that applies w/ liquor too but I don't drink - but just like a Daquiri is a ladies drink, a 1/2 caf-non-fat-vanilla-whatever is a bit girly for a man to get). I am trying to convince myself he was just scratching something and not really looking for spare change or whatever - how disappointing.

Hmm.. time to get back to finishing that work stuff I hadn't yet done.

    Night.

I'm guessing that is the reason that we are switching over to a VPN. Right now I just use a web login to access our entire AS400 and Novell network - we were told to hurry up and drag our computers in so they could hold onto them for a week and eventually set up the VPN. A month later and I haven't brought it in, and they still haven't converted us to having to use it. I have enough trouble showing coworkers how to use our 'company created interface' on the AS400 (it's not an off the shelf product like Commercial Ware or Ecommetry) so I find it difficult to believe that a hacker within reach of a wireless signal from my apt. complex is going to have a clue what to do in our system.. but hey stranger things have happened. I think the only reason for our switch is that law that was supposed to take over either June or July 1st - the one that required certain things if you were handling personal info. I already told them that essentially I did the mental CBA and it's not in my favor to get the thing set up (hmm.. let me go through a whole bunch of trouble so that I can have the privilege of working extra hours at home beyond the ones I'm already underpaid for). Of course for me it's about wanting to ensure I can put out fires and if I ever want to take a vacation or go on business trips I'll have to have this access so I can fix whatever is screwed up in my absence (not to have too much of a positive attitude or anything).

I have a trip to Colorado in just under 2-weeks so hopefully they won't force the issue prior to then. I've used VPN w/ other companies I worked for but never in conjunction w/ Wireless - well you learn something new each day - so figuring out this thing will be my lesson at some point this week.

There's no problem with connecting over a VPN on a wireless connection. A VPN is encrypted so noone can see your data. Now, if you go and add encryption to your wireless connection on top of that, you have encryption running over encryption. Good luck getting through that. The only problem is, that your connection will be SLOW do to all that encrypting/decrypting. I use a VPN over a wireless network from my work laptop too. It's REALLY slow and I have fast DSL.
